Web Media - Research: Initial idea and Flowchart
For Web Media, my group and I decided to choose the theme of anime for our web design project. This can be implemented in many ways, as my idea is to have an informative website.
The informative website is based on anime, as we can add information regarding anime such as themes, anime creators, music used in anime and the history of anime.
Flowchart of my initial idea:
Web Media - Research: Internet Art - My boyfriend came back from the war
‘My boyfriend came back from the war,’ is an interactive website where the user is able to click on different texts/links/pictures that will results in different options for the user to choose to appear.
This website is an internet artwork created by Olia Lialina in 1996.
Examples of images from the site:
Home page:
By clicking the first link it leads to the image below:
The user will cause different reactions on the website by clicking on different links on the page.
Web Media - Research: Hotglue
Hotglue is a site that allows its users to create websites directly in the web-browser. You are able to create personal webpage or a website advertising a brand or item.
Hotglue has an interface that allowed me to use it easily. I chose to use Hotglue as I am able to create and code much easily than on other coding softwares.
Main page:
Hotglue has videos showing its users how to use the site (image below):
This image shows my Hotglue site and on it is some experimental coding:
Web Media - Research: HTML & CSS
HTML
What is HTML?
HTML History
Examples of HTML

What is HTML?
HTML is the standard markup language for creating Web pages. HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. HTML describes the structure of Web pages using markup and HTML elements are the building blocks of HTML pages. HTML elements are represented by tags and the HTML tags label pices of content such as 'heading', 'paragraph', and 'table' etc. Browsers do not display the HTML tags, but use them to render the content of the page.
HTML History
There has been many versions of HTML:
- 1989 - Tim Berners-Lee invented www
- 1991 - Tim Berners-Lee invented HTML
- 1993 - Dave Raggett drafted HTML+
- 1995 - HTML Working Group defined HTML 2.0
- 1997 - W3C Recommendation: HTML 3.2
- 1999 - W3C Recommendation: HTML 4.01
- 2000 - W3C Recommendation: XHTML 1.0
- 2008 - WHATWG HTML5 First Public Draft
- 2012 - WHATWG HTML5 Living Standard
- 2014 - W3C Recommendation: HTML5
- 2016 - W3C Candidate Recommendation: HTML 5.1
Examples of HTML
- <!DOCTYPE html> declaration defines this document to be HTML5
- <html> element is the root element of an HTML page
- <head> element contains meta information about the document
- <title> element specifies a title for the document
- <body> element contains the visible page content
- <h1> element defines a large heading
- <p> element defines a paragraph
CSS
What is CSS?
CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. CSS describes how HTML elements are to be displayed on screen, paper, or in other media. CSS saves a lot of work as it can control the layout of multiple webpages all at once. External stylesheets are stored in CSS files. CSS controls the shape, position and colour of HTML elements.
Examples of CSS
Bellow are screenshots taken from my experience with CSS:
CSS colour coding:
w3school is a website that helps its users with HTML and CSS coding. It provides examples of HTML and CSS codes and different ways of using them, giving clear and easy to understand instructions.

Web Media - Research: Atom
Atom is a free and open-source text and source code editor that is usable on iMac's and Microsoft Windows. Atom was released on 25 June 2015 and was developed by GitHub.
Atom is one of the coding softwares that is available for me to use when creating my website.

This image shows what Atom looks like:
Web Media - Research: jodi
Link to Jodi website:
wwwwwwwww.jodi.org
wwwwwwww.jodi.org is a website that was created in 1995. The creators of this site are internet artists called Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans.
The site is filled with links that allows the user to explore the website. Each link leads to a different page which has even more links. This process gave me an impression of being an explorer, each link leads me into a new undiscovered land.
Clicking on different links sends the user onto a different page as seen below:
By clicking on the link 'tartget= (in above image) it sends me to the page seen bellow:
Web Media - Research: Internet Art
Internet art or net art is a form of digital artwork distributed through the internet. This form of art went around the traditional use of the galleries and museums, as it delivers an aesthetic experience through the internet.
Internet art can be interactive, examples of these are 'wwwwww.jodi.org' or 'My Boyfriend Came Back From The War.'
Internet art typically does not refer to art that has been digitized and uploaded to be viewed over the internet. This can be done through a web browser, such as images of paintings uploaded for viewing in an online gallery. Net art or internet art relies on the internet to exist, by taking advantage of aspects such as interactive interface, it allows multiple users of different cultures to connect.
Examples of Internet Artists:
Jim Andrews: Aleph Null 2011
Mauricio Arango: Vanishing Point 2005
Web media
Web Media
Curt Cloninger defines 'media' as the ways in which information is passed between people. There are 6 media characteristics of the web. There is no single characteristic that defines or is unique to the web. However, the web is the only single medium that incorporates all six.
These 6 characteristics are:
- Many-to-many networking: is where multiple users are contributing and receiving information, with the information elements often interlinked across different websites. Examples of this are file sharing and blogs.
- Multimedia: Computer games, websites and DVDs combine text, sound, images and video to present information. These text, sound, image and video are known as multimedia components.
The combination of these components is multimedia and it can be used to convey information to people effectively.
- Database: It is a structured set of data that is held in a computer, especially one that is accessible in various ways. The internet allows its users to store, search and extract information.- Automation: It is a system of operating or controlling a process through a automatic means, mainly by electronic devices, which results in human intervention to be minimized. The internet is automatic and needs only limited human interference.
- Live/Time-Shifted: This is the recording of a program to a storage medium to be viewed or listened to after the live broadcasting. The internet allows an individual to view items live or in 'real time', or it can be saved and viewed to be seen at a later date.
- Location-Independent / Device-Independent: The internet allows its user to be free to access the internet through multiple devices and in different locations e.g. internet can be viewed on phones and laptops, it can be used at home or outdoors such as a park
